Bearing adjustments
It is common for the bearing assemblies on bicycles to become loose and require an adjustment to get them back into their best operating condition. If the bearings are too loose, it can cause damage to the parts, if it is too tight, it can cause premature wear to the parts. A lot of times, special tools and knowledge are required to properly adjust the bearings on a bicycle
Brake adjustment
A properly performing braking system requires adjustment from time to time. Rim brake systems generally require that the brake pads are properly aligned in relation to the rim and their tension needs to be adjusted so that both pads hit the rim at the same time. Also brake cables and housings require periodic cleaning, lubrication, and tightening. On hydraulic disc brake systems, the rotors need to be straightened periodically and the pads need to be properly aligned. On occasion, the pistons need to be cleaned and lubricated so that the braking system can function properly.
Derailleur Adjustment
The derailleurs on your bicycle are essential to a bicycles ability to shift. The limit screws need to be properly adjusted so that the bicycle can shift properly throughout all the gears. Failure to have the limit screws properly adjusted can result in poor shifting in the best case scenario and catastrophic damage to your rear derailleur, rear wheel, chain, bicycle frame, and even the rider. The cables also need periodic cleaning and lubrication in addition to periodic adjustments to the tension on the derailleur cables so that the derailleurs shift properly.
Cable/housing installs
From time to time, a bicycle needs new cables and housing. Every time a bicycle shifts or brakes on a bike equipped with cable and housing, it wears down those parts a little at a time. Sometimes, cables and housing also get so dirty that they no longer function properly and they need to be replaced. Getting new cables and housing installed requires careful measurement to ensure that housing is of the proper length. Then new lubrication is applied to the cable and housing to ensure a smooth and crisp braking and shifting operation. Then the excess cable is trimmed and clamped with a cable end to prevent the new cables from becoming frayed.
Internal cable/housing install
Some bicycles require that the cable, housing, brake hose, or electronic shifting wires to be routed internally through the bicycle frame. This requires special tools, knowledge, and most importantly patience.
Part Installation
From time to time, replacing a broken or worn out part is the best option to breath new life into an older bicycle. Special care, tools, and attention is required to ensure that every part is installed properly using the proper grease, oils, and thread lock when required and making sure all the bolts and fasteners are tightened to the proper torque as specified by the manufacturer.
Overhauls
On older loose ball bearing assemblies, sometimes the assembly needs to be completely disassembled, all the bearings replaced, bearing races polished, all the old grease cleaned out and reassembled with new grease, and properly adjusted.
Wheel Truing
When a wheel is no longer straight, many times all that is necessary is for the wheel to be trued or straightened. The way this is accomplished is adjusting the tension on all of the spokes in the wheel so that the wheel spins straight, round and true. This is a skill that takes years to master. It requires a very specialized tools, and a understanding of the science behind bicycle wheels and how they are held together.
Brake Bleed
Periodically in hydraulic braking systems, air bubbles can get introduced into the brake lines which causes a loss in braking power. The best fix for this is a brake bleed. Bleeding the brakes is where new brake fluid is flushed through the lines pushing all of the air bubbles out and leaving new air free fluid in the lines which leaves the brake feeling powerful and responsive.
Tire/Tube install
Sometimes a bike tire just gets a puncture, pinch or blowout and the only fix is a new tube. Fixing a flat on a bicycle requires removal of the wheel from the bicycle, the removal of the tire and old tube, reinstallation of a new tube, reinstallation of the tire, then reinstallation of the wheel in the bicycle.
